绿度母在喇嘛教中相传为观世音菩萨的化身。度母，梵名Tara，全称圣救度佛母. 度母有许多不同的化现，包括有二十一度母、五百度母等等，皆为观世音菩萨之化身，而绿度母为所有度母之主尊，总摄其余二十尊化身之所有功德，她能救八种苦难，如狮难、 象难、蛇难、水难、牢狱难、贼难、非人难，又称为“救八难度母”。同时，还能把称为五毒的人类行为贪、嗔痴、慢、疑中的“疑”转成究竟圆满的智慧， 有护持妇妇幼儿的功德。本尊心咒具足一切息增怀诛之功用，消除一切众生的烦恼痛苦、满足一切众生愿求，现世富贵长寿平安吉祥、除诸病苦业魔障碍等， 帮助众生解脱生死苦海，命终往生极乐世界，获得究竟的安乐，因为其救度之迅速、摧灭魔业之勇猛，故又称作救度速勇母。
